Ontario’s Online Gambling Market Sees Strong Participation from Younger Adults and Men

A recent survey conducted by Ipsos has revealed that young adults and men are leading the charge in the province’s growing digital gaming space. With Ontario’s regulated iGaming market continuing to expand, these findings shed light on the demographic groups most actively engaging in online gambling.

The survey, which was conducted with a representative sample of over 1,000 Ontario residents, shows that adults aged 35-54 are the largest group of online gamblers, accounting for 42.5% of all players. However, it is the younger demographic that shows the most growth. 38.7% of adults aged 19-34 reported participating in online gambling sites in the past three months, a notable figure that indicates a strong presence of millennials and Gen Z in the digital gambling scene.

While younger adults are driving a large part of the growth, men are the dominant demographic in Ontario’s online gambling space. According to the survey, 64.5% of online gamblers in the province are male, compared to 35.5% female participants. This gender disparity mirrors trends observed globally, where men are more likely to engage in gambling activities, both online and offline.

What’s Driving Young Adults Toward Online Gambling?

Experts suggest that several factors are driving young adults, particularly those aged 19-34, toward online gambling. The rise of mobile gaming, coupled with the integration of sports betting and interactive casino experiences, is making it easier than ever for young people to engage in online gaming. Furthermore, the convenience of placing bets on smartphones or laptops adds to its appeal, especially for younger demographics who are already digitally savvy.

Online gambling platforms are also increasingly catering to younger tastes, offering casino bonus incentives, sports betting opportunities, and innovative gaming features that align with the interests of younger players. This has led to an increase in daily, weekly, and monthly participation rates among Ontario’s younger adult population.

Gender Gap: What Does It Mean for the Industry?

The gender disparity in Ontario’s online gambling market, with a notable predominance of male participants, is also worth exploring. Industry experts suggest that gambling, particularly sports betting, may have more appeal to men due to traditional interests in sports, competition, and gaming.

However, the industry is actively working to bridge this gap by offering a wider variety of gambling experiences that cater to different interests. These include online slots, live dealer games, and even eSports betting, which can attract a broader audience, including more women and younger players.
