Ontario’s regulated iGaming market has solidified its position as a global leader, ranking 6th worldwide in gross gaming revenue (GGR) for 2023. This achievement places Ontario ahead of prominent markets such as Michigan and New York, underscoring the province’s success in creating a competitive, innovative, and safe online gaming environment.
The milestone, highlighted in a report by Vixio, a global regulatory intelligence firm, marks a significant accomplishment for Ontario’s two-year-old open iGaming market. Alongside the ranking, Vixio honored iGaming Ontario with its “Regulatory Initiative of the Year” award, recognizing the market’s exemplary regulatory framework and its impact on the global online gaming landscape.
A Milestone for Ontario-Made Innovation
Attorney General Doug Downey attributed the achievement to a collaborative effort involving government agencies, operators, and responsible gambling advocates. “As this made-in-Ontario iGaming market celebrates its second anniversary, we are proud to have created a strong, competitive, and safer environment for players and businesses alike,” said Downey.
Since its launch, Ontario’s iGaming sector has not only attracted players to regulated platforms but also established itself as a global innovator. The market sustained over 12,000 jobs in its first year, contributing significantly to the province’s economy.
Operators and Players Propel Success
The success of Ontario’s iGaming market is bolstered by its diverse range of operators and extensive game catalog. With 47 operators offering over 5,000 certified games, the market continues to attract a wide audience, catering to various preferences across sports betting, casino games, and poker.
Ontario also ranks in the top five in North America for sports betting by total wagers, driven by its expansive offerings, including basketball, hockey, and more than 60 other sports markets.

A Blueprint for the Future
iGaming Ontario Board Chair Heidi Reinhart emphasized the collaborative effort behind the market’s success. “The numbers tell us a lot, but I’m most proud of the countless ways that government partners, operators, and players have come together to create a world-class market that is truly Ontario-made for Ontarians.”
As Ontario continues to innovate and expand its regulated gaming ecosystem, its standing as a global leader in the iGaming industry reflects both the effectiveness of its regulatory framework and the growing appeal of safer gaming options.
